Journal #21

1/21/03

Topic: "The true meaning & value of compassion and nonviolence"

One common trait of most successful people is the fact that they can see themselves from the outside. They can stand in another personís shoes and see what others see. This is what the late Martin Luther King, Jr. meant in his speech. The excerpt can be applied to the civil rights movement and to the conflict with North Vietnam. In both instances, it can be applied to both sides. King ma have intended it for those who were fighting for freedom from oppression, the blacks, but it certainly would not hurt the white people to look at themselves from another point of view or at the situation as a whole from a different perspective.
